For those of us who live in colder climates, we enjoy many of the treasures of such a climate, however one of the dreaded winter possibilities for us are frozen pipes. Here at Cleanpro Portland we would like to share a few tips and tricks to help you first, prevent the freezing of your pipes, and next to know what to do should it happen. A hassle you do not need this winter is frozen pipes. It is with this in mind that we at Cleanpro Portland would like to share some quick tips to avoid frozen pipes, as well as some advice on what to do should you discover your pipes have frozen.

Always start with how to prevent!

- Take a walk around your home to see if there are any pipes exposed to the elements. You’ll want to consider checking in the following places:

   - attic
   - crawl space
   - under sinks/in cabinets
   - garage
   -under decks

- You may find that you are not comfortable with checking all of these places alone, so certainly ask for help should you need it. Once you’ve located these exposed pipes, be sure to protect them with an insulated covering

- When you are out of the house, or when you’re sleeping, remember to leave cabinet doors open, behind which there are pipes, and closet doors as well-this will help to let some of the heat from the home into these areas, warming the pipes

- If you’re going to be gone for an extended period of time, it is recommended that you leave your heating unit on to at least 55F

- Another tip is to leave the cold water running, just a drip, to help keep the flow of water open and moving

They’re frozen. Now what?

After having tried all of these tips to prevent, it certainly may still happen that you wake up one morning, turn on your faucet, and find nothing coming out. If your pipes have frozen there are a couple of things you can do on your own to help them thaw out!

- First off, apply heat. You can use any of several different tools you may already have in your home
   - a space heater
   - hair dryer
   - heating pad
   - towels dampened with hot water
*do not use a blowtorch or other equipment that releases large amounts of heat as this will not create the desired effect, and could in fact, cause damage

- Next, it’s a waiting game. Continue to apply the heat source to the frozen area and wait for the ice to begin melting

- Be sure your faucet is on while you’re melting the ice away, the water will have to flow somewhere

- Lastly, if you find that you are not able to reach the frozen area, or are not comfortable taking care of it on your own, remember to contact a professional.

Even after the precautions you’ve taken and the steps you’ve made to unfreeze the water, it is still a possibility that a pipe will burst. If this happens, especially when you are away, you are surely aware of the damage that can be done to your carpets! Whether you’ve got dirty, wet carpets due to a burst pipe or another reason, remember the professionals from Cleanpro are here to help. For carpet cleaning in Portland, contact us at (503) 563-5451.
