If you or someone in your family suffers from carpet allergies, you may have decided to give up wall to wall carpet all together. If you’ve opted for tile or hardwood in your home, and instead have small rugs and/or area rugs in your home, remember that they too, are in need of regular cleaning. Cleanpro Portland would like to help you today, ensuring you are properly cleaning the rugs in your home by providing you with a few helpful tips.

Standard Cleaning:

- Just as wall to wall carpeting benefits from regular vacuuming, you’ll find that small and area rugs will as well
- For smaller rugs you can also consider taking them outside to shake them out, in order to remove excess dirt
- For larger area rugs it is essential that they are turned on a regular basis, depending on certain factors, this should be done at least once a year
  • When your area rug is exposed to light, there may be one side which is more exposed than the other-this can cause one side to fade more quickly than the other, which can be fixed by turning the rug
  • Likewise, if there is more foot traffic or more heavy furniture resting on one side of the rug, it will likely be the side which wears more quickly-again, turning the rug will help eliminate this issue

Specific Stain Removal:

-When you’ve got a very specific, difficult to deal with, stain on your area rug, remember the following tips to help you remove it with ease:
- For most liquid stains, especially beverages, you should start by making the following solution
  • Dish washing liquid-1 teaspoon
  • 1 quart of water
  • ¼ tablespoon of white vinegar
  • Apply this concoction to the stain and blot dry
- Should you find that you’ve got paint on your carpet, there are two possibilities, depending on the type of paint base
  • For acrylic or latex based paint you’ll want to use the detergent solution-removing the remaining color by using rubbing alcohol
  • For oil based paint you should use a sponge and some sort of mineral spirits
- To remove wax and gum, you’ll use virtually the same process
  • Start by removing what you can with your hands
  • Next, use a plastic bag with ice to cool and harden the remaining wax or gum
  • Use a very dull knife or a spoon to remove the rest
  • Lastly, vacuum the area and use a dry solvent if needed
